Invitation to Silence

An experience that will leave you speechless

"Invitation to Silence" is an exhibit that gives a stage to the non-verbal communication skills that are hidden within each one of us, as they are expressed in the absence of voice, hearing and spoken language. In this unconventional exhibit you neither hear nor speak, yet you discover an alternative and accessible world of communication – the world of hand movements and body language, in which people communicate silently, without sounds and without words.

The exhibit is a unique moral and educational initiative, led by deaf guides for whom sign language is their primary and sometimes only channel of communication.

The purpose of the exhibit is to offer visitors a unique experience, to introduce them to alternative modes of communication and discourse, and to create an unbiased encounter between deaf and hearing people.

The exhibit was created by Orna Cohen and Dr. Andreas Heinecke, the creator of "Dialog in the Dark," and enjoyed a very successful run at the Museum of Science and Industry in Paris. The exhibit is currently on display in Germany, and it is slated to open soon in Finlandand Switzerland as well.

 invetation to silence

Educationally, the exhibit has three principal topics:

1. Encounter with myself and my capabilities

The exhibit enables visitors to discover the potential and the communication skills hidden inside each one of us.

In the quietness that the exhibit provides, each visitor is given the opportunity to express ideas, emotions and thoughts through movements and signs.

2.  Encounter with myself in the group

The quietness in the exhibit compels the participants to communicate non-verbally with the people around them, and creates a situation of social pressure. Sometimes this pressure causes certain social phenomena that already existed in the group to emerge and manifest themselves more clearly.

After the tour, there is a golden opportunity to bring up various social issues relating to interpersonal and group communication, as well as other issues relating to social norms and group dynamics.

3. Encounter of hearing people with deaf and hearing-impaired people – openness to the ot

The exhibit invites connection and dialog between different populations, breaks down mental and social boundaries and raises public awareness of the deaf community.

The exhibit also presents sign language as a language like any other, based on culture, with its own syntax and grammar, etc.

From these experiences an opportunity is created to discuss various topics, from personal and group differences, to differences of opinion and of perspectives on life.
